About Moresports

About MoreSports

MoreSports is a collaborative initiative that began in 1999 starting with 3 neighbourhoods in the inner city of Vancouver. MoreSports currently provides sustainable sport and physical activity opportunities for children and families living in Vancouver. In doing so, the organization has a special focus on people who typically do not participate in sports such as girls, children from diverse ethnic groups, and those who simply face barriers to participation in sports such as cost

The ‘MoreSports Model’ is truly unique and represents sustainability and inclusivity in action. From its early beginnings until today, MoreSports actively engages ALL partners in the delivery of its programs and events including community centres, neighbourhood houses, local schools, recreation organizations, local government, local sport organizations, community school teams, non-profits, private businesses and foundations. Community capacity building, sport development and youth leadership are the key goals of the organization. By reducing traditional barriers to sport and physical activity such as the cost of participation, transportation, lack of programming and facility infrastructure, plus inability to participate in more typical competitive sport systems, MoreSports is a true success story.

Today, MoreSports involves 6 Hubs that encompass 16 Vancouver neighbourhoods, multiple partners, parents, volunteers and thousands of kids located primarily on the East Side. Currently, over 1,000 kids regularly participate in sports and physical activity programs, such as soccer and basketball, thanks to MoreSports.

MoreSports Vision

Every child in the city, regardless of social or economic background or special needs, will regularly participate in a sport and develop a life-long love of being active.

MoreSports Mission

To create sustainable community sport programs in Vancouver neighborhoods, so that all children and youth have an opportunity to develop fundamental life skills and a love of sport.

MoreSports Model

To actively engage all stakeholders in the delivery of its programs and events including community centres, neighbourhood houses, local schools, recreation organizations, local government, local sport organizations, community school teams, non-profits, private businesses and foundations. And to sustain the delivery and growth of these programs through the recruitment and training of neighbourhood youth and parents to continue as community based leaders and coaches of younger kids in sports programs.

Run Jump Throw

Run, Jump, Throw! – A New Program for Grades 1-3

False Creek School is introducing a new program for students in Grades 1-3 to provide a fun, non-competitive forum for our younger students so they may build skills and confidence in land-based sports. No consent form is required to participate and all students in Grades 1-3 are encouraged to join!

Developed by Athletics Canada and presented by BC Athletics, the Run, Jump, Throw program teaches the skills of running, jumping and throwing and the technical skill progressions for track and field events. Through a combination of games and special equipment, Run Jump Throw provides a strong foundation for success in all sports and physical activities.

PAC funds were used to purchase the Run Jump Throw equipment. A big thanks to Ms. Angela Cotter (Division 6) who obtained Run, Jump, Throw certification and will be supervising the program at False Creek School.
